The resort received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001, inspiring the work of fellow architects worldwide.

The resort underwent extensive renovations in 2017 under the guidance of Didier Lefort of DL2A to retain its much-loved vision. To protect this unique natural habitat, sustainability is also a key component to the resort’s strategy with a strong commitment to consume less energy, water and single-use plastic. Recycling and upcycling plants, a bottling plant and a permaculture garden have been created, with upcoming initiatives to protect the coral reef and surrounding areas where guests can play a conservation role.

In light of the pandemic, the Datai has put in place its own hygiene SOPs and measures to protect its guests and staffs such as temperature checks, social distancing, sanitisation, cleaning SOP, face masks for all employees and so on. There is also a group limit for activities or some privately. All employees have undergone stringent training and briefing on Covid-19 measures and practices.
